Condensation

Condensation dampness is a common issue affecting many homes and is now considered one of the leading causes of environmental damp within properties. It is especially prevalent in homes that lack adequate heating and insulation and typically worsens during the colder winter months—often referred to as the condensation season.

What It Is and How It Affects Your Home

Condensation occurs when warm, moist air hits a cold surface, forming water droplets. It’s most common in kitchens, bathrooms, and cold areas like windows, walls, or behind furniture—especially on north and east-facing walls.

Health issues like asthma and breathing problems due to spores and dust mites.

Mould needs free surface moisture to grow—it won’t form from rising damp alone.

How to Avoid Condensation

  • Cook with lids on pans
  • Dry laundry outdoors or in a ventilated room
  • Vent tumble dryers outside or use a condensing type
  • Never use gas cookers or bottled gas heaters for heating
  • Run cold water before hot when filling baths to reduce steam
  • Keep trickle vents open
  • Use humidistat-controlled extractor fans
  • Close kitchen and bathroom doors during use
  • Leave space behind furniture and ventilate wardrobes
  • Maintain background heating in all rooms
  • Avoid paraffin or bottled gas heaters
  • Upgrade loft and wall insulation
  • Insulate sloped ceilings with plasterboard or between rafters
  • Positive Input Ventilation (PIV) systems bring in fresh, filtered air and reduce indoor moisture levels long-term.
