Timber Treatments

This page provides detailed information on our professional timber preservation services, including treatments for woodworm, wet rot, and dry rot.

Learn how we protect structural timber from damaging insects and fungal decay using HSE-approved, environmentally safe fluids. Discover how we diagnose and treat both wet and dry rot, identify signs of infestation, and apply effective fungicides and biocides to preserve the integrity of your property.

Suitable for homes, historic buildings, and sites with protected species, our treatments ensure long-lasting protection and compliance with health and safety regulations.

The Purpose of Wood Preservation

The two main wood destroying agents in building timber are woodboring insects and wood rotting fungi, both if left to their own devices, will attack and weaken structural timbers, in some cases rendering them unsafe or even destroying them entirely.

Materials Used in Treatment

The fluids we use are manufactured under stringent quality control. Chemicals used in the formulation of the fluids we apply are those considered most environmentally acceptable and are approved for professional use by the Health and Safety Executive in accordance the Governments Pesticides Safety Precaution Scheme.

The materials used are suitable for use in situations where protected species, such as bats, are found.

The fluids are sprayed using a low pressure onto the surfaces of timber. Eggs or insects are killed instantly upon contact with the sprayed material. The carrying component permeates the timber taking with it the toxic chemicals which are deposited as the carrying component evaporates. The retention aid incorporated in the fluid trap volatile elements of the chemicals in the timber ensuring a prolonged effectiveness. As the deeper-seated larvae tunnel their way to the surface, they ingest the toxic deposits and are subsequently killed. Larvae resulting from new attacks are also killed when they tunnel into treated timbers.

Where fungicides are specified, fungal growths are killed upon contact and similarly as retention aids hold the toxicity of the material, spores which are deposited later are rendered ineffective.
Care should be taken to avoid roof leaks as these, and other damp sources will reduce the effectiveness of the chemicals.
The types of materials to be used will be at our discretion unless otherwise specified.

Timber Preservation & Treatment Services

Woodworm & Wood Boring Insects
Woodworm refers to various wood-boring insects whose larvae tunnel through timber, weakening structures over time. These pests typically go unnoticed until adult beetles emerge, leaving behind small flight holes. Localised treatment is rarely enough—professional assessment is essential to prevent widespread infestation.
Common Insects We Treat:
Common Furniture Beetleis the most widespread wood borer in the UK. It thrives in older buildings with exposed timber and has a life cycle of 1 to 4 years.
Death Watch BeetleA larger insect with a life cycle of up to 8 years. It targets decayed hardwood, often found in older buildings, and typically weakens structural areas like beam ends and lintels.

Our Approach: We provide comprehensive treatment using HSE-approved products, with re-entry possible within 1 hour.

Timber Preservation & Treatment Services

Wet Rot Treatment
Wet rot, often caused by long-term exposure to moisture, leads to decayed, soft timber. The most common type is Coniophora puteana.
Typical Causes:
Roof leaks, plumbing faults, or poor ventilation
Blocked gutters, shower leaks, or penetrating damp

Common Signs:
Soft, darkened timber
Musty odours and fungal growth
Cracking or shrinking wood

Our Solution: We identify moisture sources, dry the area, and apply specialist fungicides. Preventative treatment is applied to surrounding timber to stop future outbreaks.

Timber Preservation & Treatment Services

Dry Rot Treatment
Dry rot (Serpula lacrymans) is the most aggressive form of fungal decay. It spreads rapidly—even through masonry—by digesting timber and generating its own moisture.
Signs of Dry Rot:
Brittle, cracked timber
Fluffy white mycelium or orange fruiting bodies
Red spore dust or mushroom-like growths

How We Treat It:
Identify and eliminate the moisture source
Remove infected materials
Treat remaining wood and masonry with high-strength biocides
Replace timbers with treated wood for long-term protection
